Donald Perras

Educational Consultant, Donald Perras, Ph.D.  began his career as a special educator for adolescents with moderate to severe mental handicaps. 

His Ph.D. is from George Peabody College, Special Education Department, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, ranked in the top five nationally. 

As an associate professor of special education at Southern Connecticut State University for 37 years (1972 - 2009), he prepared more than 6,600 teachers to become conscientious practitioners of their profession. He specializes in programs to help educators deal with students who have serious emotional disturbance (SED) and related behavior disorders.  In addition to his current consulting work, Don taught as an  adjunct professor at  University of St. Joseph in West Hartford between 2010 – 014.

Don has designed his Ecological Model of classroom management to provide teachers and administrators with a system of strategies to improve instruction and group management [more]. Based on his Ecological Model, he taught a certification course on classroom management to educators who find themselves lacking the resources and skills to adequately deal with diverse classrooms and challenging behaviors.

From 1990 - 2020,  Don trained over 3, 800 alternative certification secondary teachers. Additionally, he has provided on-site consultation to over 55 Connecticut school districts, training and assisting in excess of 1,400 educators on classroom management procedures. He is a specialist in preparing new teachers to manage their classrooms, especially in urban communities.

Don has designed an entire series of 'teacher mental health' webinars that address Ecological Model strategies.  Each webinar focuses on coping with teacher burnout and resignations by offering a preventative system of instructional techniques  and management procedures. Personalized coaching is emphasized to maximize productivity and personal welfare.  Elementary, middle school, and high school versions.

Don has appeared on radio and television, has spoken at national conferences, and published articles in professional journals regarding classroom management.

Don is available for both virtual and on-site training and consulting. He is also available for media appearances to provide expert commentary on classroom management, instructional practices, and 'teacher mental health.'
